P2 - I will identify different organisational structures used within business organisation. I will give a description, picture and example of business that use the following organisational structure.
Organisational structure
Organisational structure is the arrangement of line of authority, communications, rights and duties of an organisation. This structure determines how the roles, power and responsibilities are assigned, controlled and coordinated, it also determines how information flows between the different layers of management within the organisation.
There are three main organisational structures such as hierarchical, flat and matrix. All organisations are likely to have several layers of authority within the business, the amount of layers depends on whether the business has a flat or hierarchical structure.
Flat - flat structure has got less number of layers or just only one layer of management. In this structure "Chain of Command" is short but the "span of control" is wider. "Span of control" refers to the number of employees that manager is responsible for. If company has got small number of management layers it usually means that the company is small.
Matrix - in a matrix structure, work of individual person is acrossing teams and projects as well as within their own department or function. As an example, if project or team task is established to develop a new product it might include engineers and specialist designers as well as those with marketing, financial, personnel and production skills.
Hierarchical - hierarchical structures contain many layers of management, feedback is transferred from lower layers upwards, this structure enables tight control within the organisation, it also offers opportunities for promotions and can help to reduce stress levels for both managers and employees. Reporting systems from the top of the structure to the bottom are known as chains of commands. The only problem with this structure is communication, if organisational works are done without effective management, it can take a lot of time for the information to be passed down the chain of commands and some staff may not have the power they should, this can cause delays and lower the employee’s motivation to work to a high standard.
John Lewis Partnership is an example of a business with hierarchical structure.
